Katie Vavao
Vice President
Katie Vavao is a seasoned communications professional with over two decades of experience in California’s political landscape. She’s led multiple political and communications campaigns at national, state and local levels.
While serving as the Communications Director for California Volunteers, Office of the Governor, Katie led a team of communications specialists and served as a primary spokesperson for statewide initiatives. Her expertise spans content creation, media relations, digital communications and strategic event management.
Katie’s tenure with the California State Assembly spanned over 16 years, and solidified her deep understanding of the legislative process and political strategy. As Deputy Director of the Assembly Democratic Caucus, Katie pioneered innovative communication programs and managed a diverse staff of over 30 team members. She successfully launched and rebranded the Democratic Office of Communications and Outreach, incorporating new project management systems and overseeing high-profile campaigns such as the 2020 US Census. Her work consistently involved navigating complex political, operational and communications challenges while building consensus among stakeholders.
Additionally, Katie served as the California State Director for a presidential campaign and the campaign manager for various state-level races. She served as Deputy Statewide Field Director for the California Democratic Party for four consecutive election cycles.
Katie is an alumna of University of California, Davis and California State University, Sacramento. When she’s not crafting communications strategies, Katie can be found camping with her husband Josh and their two children, though the family’s true passion lies in their frequent pilgrimages to Disney parks, where her strategic planning skills are put to the ultimate test.
